CHARLES CITY — The Comet boys golf team had only two home meets scheduled this season.

Mother Nature almost made it none.

It already washed-out Charles City’s season-opening triangular on April 7, and Thursday’s Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet against Crestwood at Cedar Ridge Golf Course seemed destined to suffer the same fate as cloud cover resembling a giant damp and dingy dish rag loomed over the course and the players.

Nonetheless, the Comets and Cadets got it in with the one-time hosts going undefeated this season at home with a convincing 29-stroke victory (156-185).

Comet senior Carson Gallup added another medal to his growing collection after leading all competitors with a 35 on Cedar Ridge’s back-nine.

Senior Riley Perez and junior Bryce Walker both shot 40s, and junior Sawyer Hanson rounded the Comets’ team score with a personal-best 41.

Owen Korsmo had a 44 to lead the Cadets.

Charles City also won the junior varsity meet (183-201) with senior Quinn Heidebrink and freshman Jackson Ruzicka shooting 45s for the Comets.

Most of the varsity players completed their 9-hole rounds in time to avoid the rainfall that came in earnest at the end of the meet, but few if none made it back to the clubhouse completely dry as a fine mist persisted and sporadically produced intermittent rain drops.

On Tuesday at Waukon Golf and Country Club, Gallup matched a personal-best high school 9-hole score (34) he established during freshman season as his 1-under effort helped Charles City defeat Waukon 153-157.

Walker (39), Riley Perez (40) and Nick Williams (40) rounded out Charles City’s best team 9-hole score of the season, 5 strokes better than its previous SB.

Freshman Jackson Ruzicka shot a career-best 40 for Charles City’s junior varsity team, which had its best showing of the season at Waukon.

Charles City’s boys (3-3 in dual meets) will be back in action this Monday (May 5) for the Columbus Catholic Sailor Invitational at Sunnyside Golf and Country Club in Waterloo.

REGION GOLF ROUNDUP: North Butler freshman Zoey Thompson shot a 9-hole medalist score of 42 to lead the Bearcats to a quadrangular girls golf victory, Thursday at Round Grove Country Club in Greene.

The hosting Bearcats’ team score (201) bested Osage (214), Riceville (249) and Northwood-Kensett (290).

Osage won the boys quadrangular (145) while being led by senior medalist Heath Voight (32), followed by North Butler (165) with runner-up senior Nolan Reser (34), Northwood-Kensett (189) and Riceville (218).

At Nashua Town and Country Club on Thursday, Nashua-Plainfield’s boys and girls teams won the respective triangulars they were hosting.

In the girls meet, medalist Paige Franzen (39) and runner-up Faith Franzen (42) paced the first-place Huskies (189) over Forest City (215) and Rockford (262).

The Husky boys won their meet with a team score of 170 ahead of Saint Ansgar (173) and Rockford (214).

Rockford senior Kylen Enabnit was the medalist (40) with NP’s Devon Blanchard and Saint Ansgar’s Hudson Sparrow both 1 shot behind and tied at runner-up.
