Bulldogs close the door on Comets with 7-1 boys soccer substate win

HAMPTON — Senior midfielder Fernando Mota scored 5 goals while leading the Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys soccer team to a 7-1 win over Charles City, Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2A-Substate 2 bracket.
HDC had previously defeated CC (8-0) in a regular-season match at Comet Field.
The Bulldogs (10-3-3) advance to the semifinal round next Tuesday (May 27) to face Aplington-Parkersburg (10-3-1) at A-P — the Falcons received a first-round bye.
For the Comets (2-12-1), senior Carter Haberkorn scored his team’s lone goal with junior mid-fielder and fellow team captain Jackson Kowalski assisting.
Haberkorn led Charles City this season with 6 goals and “points scored” (15) that includes his three assists.
Kowalski had a team-high four assists with 5 goals for 14 total points this season.
