DES MOINES — It seems that the only thing to momentarily prevent Sofia Calpito’s school record in the 100-meter hurdles from being broken on almost a weekly basis is the end of the track and field season.
And there’s where we are right now after the conclusion of last weekend’s State Track and Field Championships held at Drake Stadium.
During Friday’s preliminaries in the Class 3A girls 100-meter hurdles, the Charles City sophomore qualified for the final the following day with a time of 15.21 seconds — matching her personal-record she set at the state-qualifier.
A month earlier at the Comet Relays, Calpito broke the Charles City school record in the girls 100 hurdles held by Lisa Berns since 2010 with a time of 15.34. In subsequent meets, Calpito repeatedly shaved time off the record all the way to the state-qualifier before matching it in the state prelims.
In the final, Calpito medaled with a seventh-place time of 15.28. ADM senior Josi Dufoe won the event with a first-place time of 14.50 seconds.
Calpito also broke and re-broke the school record in the girls long jump with a PR leap of 17 feet, 9 ½ inches at the state-qualifier.
Competing in the Class 3A girls long jump less than an hour after the hurdles prelims on Friday morning, Calpito placed 16th with a flight of 15 feet, 11 ½ inches.
Charles City senior Leah Stewart, who holds a pair of Comet records in the discus and shot put, finished her prep career before throwing for Wartburg College next winter/spring with an 11th place showing in the Class 3A girls shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 4 ½ inches. Hampton-Dumont-CAL senior Charlee Morton won the event with a throw of 47 feet, 6 ¼ inches.
Stewart previously placed 10th at the end of her sophomore season and ninth at the end of her junior season in the SP at state.
During Thursday’s field events at state, Stewart placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 115 feet.
Charles City’s 1600-meter medley relay team of — in leg order — sophomore Patrict Bruening, senior Ezekiel Causey, junior Victor Ward and senior Xander Graeser placed 21st out of 24 Class 3A qualifying teams with a season-best time of 3 minutes, 40.07 seconds during Friday’s final.
Western Dubuque won the relay with a time of 3:24.50.
Ward also qualified in the Class 3A boys 100- and 200-meter dashes, but didn’t make the finals.
