CHARLES CITY — The Charles City Comets were able to hold off a relentless assault on their goal during the first half of their Class 2A-Region 1 girls soccer first-round match against Decorah at Comet Field last Friday.
That in part resulted in a 0-0 halftime tie.
But the Vikings, who shelled the Comets with 43 shot attempts with more than a quarter classified as “shots on goal”, eventually found the net and advanced to the semifinal round by way of a 4-0 victory.
Viking junior midfielder Nora Lesmeister opened the scoring with 27:46 left in the second half when her shot was deflected by the cleat of either a teammate or opponent about 10 yards in front of the Comets’ goal. The change of direction caught Comet keeper Kayla Streich off-balance as she was unable to record one of her many saves during the match.
Lesmeister would score again, and sophomore forward Vivian Searcy would also score 2 goals for the Vikings (2-13-2), who will face No. 1-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock in the semifinals on Wednesday at WSR.
In their first varsity season, the Charles City Comets finished at 5-7-1 and momentarily had a winning record late in the season.
