CEDAR FALLS — For two-straight days and through 36 holes of play, Charles City senior Carson Gallup was a model of consistency during the Class 3A Boys State Golf Championship held this week at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

On Tuesday, Gallup placed himself within the Top 10 with an even 72 before shooting a 71 on Wednesday, totaling 143 for a fourth-place tie with MOC-Floyd Valley junior Carson Korver.

Nevada sophomore Parker Rodgers paced the field of 81 state-qualifiers with a two-day total of 137, one shot better than runner-up, Gilbert senior Ryan Lynch.

Solon senior Isaiah Zoske, who was atop the leaderboard with Rodgers after shooting 5-over 67 the first day, placed third (140).

The five referenced players were the only ones who finished under par after 36 holes.

Also finishing in the top eight were Waverly-Shell Rock seniors Luke Frazell, who finished with an even 144, and Tyler Gade, who shot 1 over with a 145.

Waverly-Shell Rock and MOC-Floyd Valley each compiled scores of 588 to lead a field of 12 team state qualifiers.

Gallup has been a prolific meet medalist who has shot some of the lowest scores in Comet history throughout his prep career at Charles City, but it wasn’t until his senior season that he qualified for the state championships.

“Carson finished off an incredible season today,” said Comet head coach Joel Bruner, who took over the program this season.

For Gallup, there is far more golf to play as he still has a season of eligibility for the Iowa PGA Junior Golf Tour this forthcoming summer.

Last season on tour, Gallup consistently placed in the top seven while tying for first at the Greater Cedar Rapids, placing third at the Woodland Hills Junior Open, and tying for third at the Waterloo Junior Classic.

One particular highlight came at the Okoboji Junior Open on July 28 when Gallup aced the course’s 340-yard, Par 4, No. 3 hole in the first round of play. With a birdie being one shot under par, and an eagle being two shots under, what Gallup achieved with his three shots under hole-in-one was the rarest of birds — an “Albatross”.

Gallup eventually tied for second at the rain-shortened Okoboji Junior Open.
