Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — Thirteen can’t get any unluckier than having that number of runs scored against you in a single half inning.

The Saint Ansgar Saints compiled a “baker’s dozen” in the top of the first of Tuesday’s non-conference baseball game against Charles City at Comet Diamond.

With a solid long-relief performance by freshman Ethan Hadley, some catches on the run from junior left-fielder Vincent Benning, and a half-inning ending unassisted doubleplay performed by sophomore shortstop Cameron Littleton after a snared a hot-liner with a runner at second off on contact, the Comets contained to hold the Saint to 2 more runs in the next three innings.

But with Charles City unable to bring a run home through four innings, the game was stopped with Saint Ansgar winning big 15-0.

The Saints (4-0) had only six hits during the game but took advantage of three Comet errors in the first inning as well as six walks.

The one-sided win wasn’t entirely painless for the Saints as seven of their batters were hit by pitches.

On Monday, the Comets round themselves down 15-2 through fourth-and-a-half innings while hosting Independence before suddenly pulling within a grand-slam of the Mustangs with a 9-run fifth inning

Independence hung on to win 16-11.

Benning had two hits including a double, drove in a run and scored 2 runs himself; junior Holden McInroy had a double and an RBI; and junior Sawyer Hanson was 1 for 2 with an RBI and walked three times for the Comets against the Mustangs.

Going into Thursday’s Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader against New Hampton on the road, the Comets (0-3) were still looking for their first victory of the season.

Charles City is scheduled to be back in action next Monday (June 2) for a road game against Oelwein.
