WATERLOO — Charles City sophomore Sofia Alinea, who became the first player to win a tennis regional singles title during the decade-long tenure of Comet coach Brian Parrott, had her season ended two matches into the Class 1A Girls Tennis Singles Championship, last Friday at Byrnes Park Tennis Center.

Alinea lost her first-round match to South Hardin senior Abby Teske 6-1, 6-4.

In the consolation side of the bracket, Alinea lost the first set to Grinnell sophomore Kennedy Harms 6-3 before rebounding to win the second set 6-4.

Harms won the 10-point super tiebreaker (11-9) to advance in the consolation bracket but only lasted one more match.

In Saturday’s championship match, Xavier sophomore Gabriella Fleming defeated Columbus Catholic junior Kate Holton in straight sets.
