WEST UNION — With healthy contributions from multiple hitters up and down their lineup, the Charles City Comets exploded for a pair of one-sided victories during the latter day of the North Fayette Valley Softball Invitational held Friday and Saturday.
With a 12-4 win over MFL MarMac followed by a five-inning 14-3 victory over Beckman Catholic, Charles City improved to 6-5 for the season.
Charles City eighth-grader Layla Barry earned her first varsity softball pitching win of her budding career after yielding 1 earned run in four innings against MFL MarMac.
Senior Brooklyn Molitor was 2 for 3 with a double as well as the second home run hit this season for the Comets (Molitor has both); and eighth-grader Lexan Joslin was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs batted in in the win against MFL MarMac.
In the subsequent win over the Trailblazers, the Comets pounded out 16 hits in five half-innings.
The barrage started from the top with leadoff hitter Emerson Bohlen going 3 for 3 with a double, RBI and 3 runs scored.
Joslin was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs while capping a five-hit day; Payton Hadley was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs; and freshman Jaeda Molstead and eighth-grader Ali Shirley both went 2 for 3 as well as driving in 2 runs.
The win over the Trailblazers avenged a 11-6 loss from the week before when Beckman Catholic defeated Charles City in the final game of the Jerry Newton Classic held at Comet Field.
The Comets will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Northeast Iowa Conference rival Crestwood.
