CHARLES CITY — Freshman southpaw ace Addison Ellis returned to the pitcher’s circle for Charles City during Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference softball game against Decorah and helped lead the Comets to a 3-2 victory that was delayed and eventually ended after four and a half innings.
Ellis yielded four hits and 1 earned run through five innings pitched while striking out five and walking none. She improved her still-perfect season record (4-0) as the Comets improved to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the NEIC.
Ellis has been splitting playing time this season with the Top Gun 16U-SKIM softball team based in Kansas City.
Decorah (10-6, 3-2) nearly tied the game shortly before it was stopped with a bang-bang play at the plate that ruled the Viking base runner out.
Senior leadoff hitter Emerson Bohlen was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Comets, who will travel to the site of the State Softball Championships — Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge — for the Fort Dodge Invitational this weekend.
On Friday morning (9 a.m.), the Comets are due to face Class 5A No. 4-ranked Ankeny Centennial in the first round of games.
