Charles City senior Payton Hadley, who currently leads her team with a .507 slugging percentage, and the rest of the Comets will host Decorah in the first round of the Class 4A-Region 8 bracket on July 10.

Charles City will host Northeast Iowa Conference rival Decorah in the first round of the Class 4A-Region 8 Softball Bracket, 7 p.m. July 10.

The winner will face Western Dubuque in the semifinals at Farley Community Park, 7 p.m. July 10. The regional championship will take place at a site to be determined, 7 p.m. July 15.

In the Class 1A-Region 2 bracket, Nashua-Plainfield will host Rockford in the first round at the NP Softball Complex in Plainfield, 7 p.m. July 7.

In the Class 2A-Region 7 bracket, North Butler will host South Winneshiek in the first round at the NB Softball Field in Allison, 7 p.m. July 9.

COMETS GO 1-3 AT RICK DORAN CLASSIC: The Charles City Comets went 1-3 over the past weekend while playing in the Rick Doran Softball Classic at the University of Iowa Softball Complex.

The Comets lost their first game 2-1 to Iowa City West on Friday. Freshman southpaw Addison Ellis suffered the pitching loss despite striking out 13 Trojans and walking none while yielding five hits and 1 earned run in six innings.

Senior Emerson Bohlen drove in Charles City’s lone run against ICW.

The Comets dropped their following game to Davenport North (9-5). Eighth-grader Ali Shirley had 3 RBIs for Charles City.

On Saturday, the Comets picked up their lone win of the tournament when defeating Bettendorf 3-1. Shirley went 3 for 4 and hit her first home run of her varsity career, and Ellis struck out 14 in seven innings while yielding six hits and one earned run.

Later on Saturday, the Comets were shut out by Muscatine (8-0) while falling to 12-13 overall for the season.

On Tuesday (July 1), Charles City will host Waukon in a Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader as part of “Future Comet Night” starting at 5 p.m.
