CHARLES CITY — Less than a week after recording their first win of the season against Crestwood in the second game of last Friday’s doubleheader, and losing a close game to the semi-state ranked New Hampton Chickasaws on Monday, the Charles City Comets were humbled by a pair of back-to-back 12-1 losses in both ends of Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference baseball doubleheader against Decorah.
In the first 12-1 final, Viking sophomore Gavin Knutson was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI; and senior starting pitcher Brayden Wemark yielded three hits and 1 earned run while striking out nine and walking one in six innings for Decorah as the game was stopped short of seven innings.
Comet juniors Vincent Benning, Luke Jacobs and Holden McInroy each with 1 for 3 with McInroy driving in his team’s lone run in the first game.
In the second game, the Vikings were led by junior Trevor Kuennen who went 2 for 2 while driving in 3 runs. Freshman Ethan Kuennen yielded two hits and 1 earned run while striking out four and walking two in three-and-two-thirds innings pitched for the second-game win for Vikings (22-8, 11-5 NEIC).
Benning and senior Jackson Ruzicka had the only hits for the Comets (1-22, 1-15), who travel to Algona on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader against the future North Central Conference rival Bulldogs — Charles City joins the NCC after the conclusion of the current 2024-25 school/sport year.
