Ian Collins half-inch short of winning fourth state gold medal
Press photo by John Burbridge Charles City senior Ian Collins takes off for what would be a leap of 23 feet, 1/4 inch during the Class 3A Boys Long Jump at the State Track and Field Championships. The effort was just a 1/2-inch shy of matching Carlisle senior Archer Ogbourne's state-winning leap. The day before, Collins won his second-straight state high jump title by matching his and the school's all-time best by clearing a height of 6 feet, 9 inches. Collins was also going for his second-straight LJ state title.

Comet Lydia Staudt leaps for personal-best while earning another state medal in LJ
Photo by John Burbridge Down to her last jump after scratching on her first two, Charles City senior Lydia Staudt took a "wing and prayer" approach to her third jump and managed to advance to the medal round of the Class 3A Girls Long Jump during the Friday session of the State Track and Field Championships. Staudt eventually leaped for a personal-best — 17 feet, 3 1/2 inches — while placing sixth. Staudt also medaled with a sixth-place showing at last year's state meet.

Husky Girls make history at State Track and Field Championships

Bearcat Kiya Johnson wins Class 1A Girls 400 Hurdle state title
