The learning day will get a little longer for 4-year-olds at Immaculate Conception (IC) Catholic Elementary school next fall.

IC Principal Laurie Field said that after taking a survey of families and much discussion, the faith-based Catholic School in Charles City will start to offer all-day preschool for 4-year-old children in the fall of 2021. Interested parents can contact the school to learn how to sign up.

“We’re so excited to be able to offer this to our families,” Field said. “We really wanted to meet the needs of the community.”

IC provides education for students in preschool through 6th grade, available to students of all faiths and abilities, in Charles City and surrounding communities.

Field said that Carrie Shaver will teach the class. Shaver is certified and already on staff and Field said she has a good amount of previous preschool experience.

“She has a lot of knowledge and brings a lot of great things to the table,” Field said. “The class will focus on kindergarten readiness, social skills and friendship skills.”

Currently IC offers class three mornings a week and every afternoon for 4-year-old students. Next year there will be the all-day class offered as well as a class Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. There will also be a class for 3-year olds offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which was something families had suggested in the survey.
