In a battle of youth versus height, if the game is basketball, the taller team — especially if it’s taller by a foot or more — is likely to come out the winner.

That was the case Wednesday afternoon as a group of Immaculate Conception Elementary School teachers took on the combined athletic talent and endurance of the sixth-grade class.

The game, along with the annual school birthday party, had been scheduled to take place on Friday as part of the week-long celebration of National Catholic Schools Week. But sub-zero temperatures caused classes to be canceled Friday, and along with them the extra activities.

The basketball games — including fifth-grade boys versus sixth-grade boys and fifth-grade girls against sixth-grade girls — were held Wednesday afternoon at the end of the school day.

COVID-19 concerns caused the spectators to consist mostly of fifth and sixth graders and a few other staff, but the games were also livestreamed on the school’s Facebook page.

Even though the teachers ended up at the winning end of a lopsided 23-7 victory after two six-minute periods, it was apparent both sides were having a lot of fun.
