Charles City will celebrate its history this weekend as the Floyd County Museum readies its annual Heritage Fest.

“It’s our biggest event of the year,” said Mckenna Lloyd, the museum’s director.

Celebrating the heritage of Charles City on Saturday, July 29, Heritage Fest will feature a range of games and activities both at the museum and neighboring Andres Memorial Park. Crafts, vendors, local artists, and more will be set up to offer something for everyone to enjoy.

Visitors can learn about old-fashioned methods for making things like soap and ice cream while enjoying traditional Norwegian folk music from Vidar Skrede and performances from the Cedar Summerstock group.

At the information desk, a stamp sheet will be available for kids to mark off which activities they’ve participated in. Getting enough stamps will be rewarded with a special extra prize in the museum.

Along with free entry to the museum for the day, certain special displays will be out for public viewing, such as historical tractors and the iconic Charles City Popcorn Wagon.

Pre-made popcorn will be available at the wagon, but Loyd hopes that one day the wagon itself will be fit for popping again.

“We’re hoping to restore it with grant funds in the future,” said Lloyd.
