CHARLES CITY — Needing to get out of rut consisting of three-straight loses, the Charles City Comets boys basketball team found itself trailing Oelwein even before the opening tipoff.

The Comets were whistled for a technical foul due to a player hanging on the rim during the layup drill.

Husky sophomore Dominique Robertson split a pair of technical free throws, and then — after Oelwein was awarded subsequent possession of the ball as the tipoff was nullified, Hunter Logan drilled a 3-point shot and suddenly the Comets were down 4-0.

Talk about being snakebitten.

But even with one of their best players (Cade Hemesath) in street clothes due to an ankle injury, the Comets were able to seize control of the game and eventually won by a 21-point margin (63-42).

Charles City sophomore Jack Molstead showed signs of regaining his early-season “lights outs” shooting form as he led all scorers with 23 points, including three 3-points and several nice finishes at the hole in the open-court and the half-court.

Junior Noah Schlader, who has the team’s outside hot hand as of late, scored 17 points with five 3-pointers for the Comets, who improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast Iowa Conference.

The Comets also got a lift from 6-5 senior Jaden Foster, who has taken over as the team’s leading rebounder — an area where the team sometimes struggles at — as he again breached double-figures in missed shot retrieval.

Robertson had 18 for Oelwein (3-12, 0-8).

The Huskies will get another chance against the Comets on Tuesday when they host their end of the season series.
