Charles City junior Ian Collins (No. 3) takes it hard to the hole despite the looming presence of Waverly-Shell Rock senior Caleb Burks (No. 44). The shot-blocking and altering prowess of the 6-foot-7 Burks was one of the reasons why the Comets were held to a season-low offensive output as the Go-Hawks swept the season series with a 56-34 home win on Tuesday.

WAVERLY — The frigid cold front forecasted for the weekend came several days earlier for the Charles City Comets.

In the latter game of their Northeast Iowa Conference boys basketball season series, the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks complete their sweep of the Comets with a 56-34 home victory on Tuesday.

It was the lowest offensive output for Charles City this season — matched by its previous loss to W-SR.

With a sticky-as-molasses defense which they seem to especially roll out for the Comets, the Go-Hawks guard the perimeter like patrolling the DMZ, fighting through screens and seamlessly switching when needed. This often has the backing of senior Caleb Burks, who’s longer than his 6-foot-7 frame indicates when including his limbs and is a shot-blocking and shot-altering menace even from the other side of lane.

Waverly-Shell Rock plays the type of defense that can make you forget about its offense. Go-Hawk junior Hogan Hansen reminded the Comets of his shooting range with a game-high 20 points which included three 3-point field goals.

With the Go-Hawks (9-7, 6-3 NEIC) up by 30 going into the fourth quarter, it at least gave Charles City’s reserves an opportunity for substantial playing time.

Calvin Hanson made the most of this opportunity with a career varsity high 10 points off the bench.

The Comets (6-10, 3-6) will be back in action on Friday when they host Crestwood. Hopefully, things will heat up by then.

* In the Waverly-Shell Rock-Charles City girls basketball game played at Comet Gym on Tuesdays, the Class 4A-ranked Go-Hawks improved to 16-2 while maintaining their undefeated first-place perch in the NEIC (10-0) with a 63-21 victory.

The Comet girls (2-16, 1-9) will travel to Crestwood on Friday.
