Comet bowlers roll over Cyclones in home-opener

Ross didn’t get the “Brooklyn” strike he had hoped for, but he avoided a split and later picked up the spare on way to a 171 game to cap a 339 two-game series while helping the Comet boys defeat the Cyclones by more than 500 pins.
The Comet boys and girls — who also won big over Denver — will be back in action after the Thanksgiving Break on Dec. 3 at Comet Bowl where they will host Sumner-Fredericksburg.

CHARLES CITY — Even on the heels of Thanksgiving, Turkeys were hard to come by during the Charles City Comet bowling teams’ season-openers, Tuesday at Comet Bowl.
In the bowling lexicon, “turkey” is a string of three strikes.
With the boys and girls hosting Denver, it took a while for Comet senior Cael Bohlen to shoot one. The defending Class 1A boys state champion had a hard time finding the pocket in the first game of the individual round before throwing three straight strikes to salvage a 194, and then rolling a 215 in the latter game for a meet-high 409 series.
Comet junior left-hander Kaleb Cotton hit 400 on the button with individual games of 190 and 210. And with junior Jackson Cook (205 game, 364 series), freshman Keaton Ross (339) and senior Landon Luft (307) rounding out the individual scores for Charles City, and a Baker Rotation round that included games of 213 and 206, the Comet boys’ combined total of 2,741 was more than 500 pins better than that of the Cyclones.
You can argue that the “Gold Standard” high school bowling score is 3,000 or better as it takes a 200 average in both rounds to reach it.
Many of Charles City’s returners from last season have helped the Comets reach and exceed that standard in the past, including a 3,308 team score good enough for third place at last season’s State Bowling Championships.
But even though the Comet coaching staff reminded the team of the un-picked up spares left during the night, Charles City’s modest winning total in its opener was duly commended due to the varying lane conditions on the pairs bowled on.
The Comet girls also won their match against Denver by more than 500 pints (554 to be exact) with a total of 2,287.
Sophomore Imigin McHenry led the Comets with a 364 series that included a high game of 194.
Rounding out the scoring for Charles City were freshman Claire Girkin (333), junior Sofia Nelson (328), junior Ragan Hintgen (281) and freshman Jenya Stevenson, whose 248 series bested junior Aliya Elsbury by 1 pin for the Comets’ fifth individual series scored.
After the holiday break, the Comets will be back at Comet Bowl to host Sumner-Fredericksburg on Dec. 3.
