CHARLES CITY — Even after setting school records in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in his lone varsity season with the Charles City football team, and recently signing to continue his football career at Iowa Central, Comet senior Keenan Wiley will be the first to tell you that basketball is his “true love”.

Recently, basketball loved Wiley back — or at least the Northeast Iowa Conference did — as he was named to the All-NEIC Boys Basketball First Team last week.

An All-NEIC Second Team selection last season, Wiley led the Comets in scoring (16.3 ppg), rebounding (9.1 rpg) and steals (2.5 spg) while helping Charles City finish the season strong before losing to No. 1-ranked Decorah in the Class 3A-Substate 3 championship game.

Two other Comet seniors, Jack Hanson and Jeb Wandro, were both named to the All-NEIC Second Team.

Hanson led the Comets in assists (4.3 apg) while scoring 12.5 ppg and avering 2.1 steals per game.

Wandro averaged 10.2 points per game while shooting 38% from the 3-point range in 158 attempts. And as he did even during his underclass seasons, Wandro often acted as the “coach on the floor” while talking and communicating with his teammates in the midst of battle, which is (ironically) easier said than done.
