Area children will have the opportunity to step back in time for a day of fun and learning when the National 19th Amendment Society holds its annual Prairie Day Camp next month.

The camp will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home, and is open to children entering first grade through fifth grade this fall.

Campers will participate in a variety of lively games and activities related to 1860s farm life, including several new to this year’s camp, according to information from the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home.

They will walk through prairie land guided by Heidi Reams, Floyd County naturalist, and enjoy old-fashioned pressed apple cider made on-site. Campers will also learn about the right to vote, a cause for which Carrie was a champion, and participate in a mock election.

Lunch, with a menu of foods Carrie would have eaten growing up as a child, will be provided. Each child will come home with a book they have created as a keepsake about themselves as well as fun at camp.

Registration forms will be sent out by mail or email upon request by contacting 641-228-3336 or clccatt@gmail.com. Forms may also be picked up at Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home, 2379 Timber Avenue, Charles City, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Completed registration forms should be returned by July 31.

Prairie Day Camp is led by the National 19th Amendment Society in partnership with Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area.
