As part of the U.S. Highway 18 resurfacing project, work to replace the existing signal lights at the intersections with Grand Avenue and Clark Street in Charles City will begin on Monday, May 10, and continue until mid-October.

The existing signal lights will be removed and temporarily replaced with four-way stop signs at the intersections, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

Underground work for utilities, storm sewers, signals and curbing, as well as pavement work on U.S. 18 from Gilbert Street to the Cedar River railroad crossing, will be taking place, as well.

The $4.6 million project includes milling and resurfacing the highway, new curb and gutter where there currently isn’t any, and updating sidewalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
