A Charles City man is being held on an assault charge after allegedly attacking a woman last week.

Joseph Lee Bennett, age 23, is charged with assault on a victim causing serious injury, a Class C felony. He is currently being held in the Floyd County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

According to a report by the Charles City police, Bennett was arrested Friday evening at the police station on a warrant from the incident, which allegedly had occurred after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, in the 600 block of 11th Street in Charles City.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Floyd County District Court, Bennett physically assaulted the victim with intent and causing serious injury by grabbing the person and hitting her “several times in the face and head, causing injury and pain.”

“Injuries included lacerations and a broken bone above one eye,” the report said. The victim was transported by ambulance to Floyd County Medical Center with what the police report called non-life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday a no-contact order was filed between Bennett and the alleged victim.
