Three people were injured in a head-on collision in Floyd Monday afternoon.

The Iowa Highway Patrol reported that Elizabeth Schmidt, 19, of Charles City, was driving a 2005 Chevy Suburban westbound on county road B33 west of Quail Avenue and attempted to pass a road grader that was also westbound.

The road grader was causing a cloud of dust, creating poor visibility at the time, the report said.

At the same time, Brandon Hummel age 35, of Riceville, was driving eastbound. The vehicles collided in the eastbound lane.

Hummel and a passenger in the Schmidt vehicle, Joseph Holzer, age 20, of Charles City, were transported by ambulance to MercyOne-North Iowa in Mason City, where they were treated and released, according to a nursing supervisor.

Schmidt was transported by Mercy AirMed to the Mayo Clinic hospitals in Rochester, the State Patrol reported. No condition report was available Monday evening, the hospital said.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were AMS ambulance, Cowell Fire Department, Floyd Fire Department, Charles City EMS and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, the report said.
