Letters to the Editor: Support Plan 3 in special election

By Derek Johnson, Rockford

I have read the previous letters regarding a vote for plan 1 and they have some valid points if you reside in Charles city. I would encourage anyone on the fence to look across the whole county.

Why is the population steadily declining if the representation has been so good the last 60 years? Why are the rural areas dying off with fewer residents every year? Anyone outside of Charles city will tell you that the supervisors are there to do what’s best for the whole county, not act as an extension of a city council.

One point I saw was that Charles city has 45% of the population of Floyd county and that is correct, which is also why you don’t see anyone from the rural parts running for a seat. To put it simply, they can’t win.

A vote for plan 3 would ensure that their vote would count for a supervisor they believe in, rather than getting lost to the majority in Charles city.

The Coalition for Better County Government is supporting plan 3 in the election on Aug. 3 (today) , because they feel “the worst thing they can do is to do nothing.”

Taxpayers deserve more accountability for their tax dollars paid to and spent by the county.

Things change and we are falling behind. All counties surrounding Floyd County use plan 3 and are doing well, as do other counties in the state. Following plan 3, outlying areas of the county would have better representation by electing a supervisor from their district who could then work together with the other district supervisors for a better county government.

The people of Charles City would still be represented fairly in each of their districts..

Saying “this is the way we have always done it for all these years” doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best way now. If that were so and we wouldn’t accept changes over the years, women would not be able to vote in this election!
