Doug Bohlen and his grandson Cael Bohlen get their photo taken by son/father Brian Bohlen after the Class 1A Boys State Tournament from which the Charles City Comets boys team, coached by Doug, placed third and Cael won the Class 1A individual title with a 546 series — the second-highest two-game series recorded in Iowa prep bowling this season and the third highest ever bowled at the state tournament.
The Iowa High School Bowling Coaches Association in conjunction with the Iowa Girls Coaches Association recently honored Cael and Doug, as well as several other members of the Comet boys and girls state-qualifying teams. Cael, a junior, was named to the Class 1A All-State Second Team. Cael was also named to the Class 1A Central District First Team with teammates Nathan Girkin (sr.) and Kaleb Cotton (jr.); Comet junior Landon Luft was named to the All-Central District Second Team.
Comet girls named to the Class 1A Central District First Team were seniors Sarah Mitchell, Brianna Ross and Heather Viers; Comet sophomore Imigin McHenry was named to the Second Team.
Doug Bohlen was named Central District “Coach of the Year” for both boys and girls.
