Oelwein catcher Alexa Berryman loses control of the ball after a collision at the plate with Charles City’s Rachel Chambers during the first game of a DH last week. Chambers was shaken up by the play and had to leave the game, but fortunately for the Comets she returned in the second game and has continued to power Charles City’s offense through the five subsequent games.

WEST UNION — How do you respond after giving up 2 runs in the top of the ninth?

Rally for 3 in the bottom half.

That’s what the Charles City Comets did while propelling themselves to a 10-9 win over Solon as part of Saturday’s softball tournament hosted by North Fayette Valley.

Rachel Chambers had three hits and 2 runs batted in; Ava Ellis had three hits including a double; and Lydia Staudt, Ashlyn Hoeft, Sadie Gebel, Allie Cross and Alex Wohlers each had two hits for the Comets, who went 3-1 at the tournament.

Among the other Charles City victories was a 17-0 win over MFL-Mar-Mac. Kiki Connell was 3 for 3 with a double, drove in 2 runs, scored 3 herself and stole two bases for the Comets.

Hoeft was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBIs; Ellis was 2 for 3 with a double; and starter Dani Reetz and reliever Natalie White combined for a 1-hitter before the game was called after four innings.

The Comets’ third win was a 12-5 final over Union Community.

Chambers was 2 for 4 with a double, home run and 4 RBIs; and Staudt, Hoeft and Gebel each had two hits.

The Comets lost to Independence 4-1 during the tourney as the Mustangs avenged an 11-2 loss to Charles City during the Comets’ home-opener.

Independence freshman Allison Kleve limited the Comets to just two hits, both of which were from leadoff hitter Connell who also scored the team’s lone run.

* On Monday, the Comets seized sole possession of first place in the Northeast Iowa Conference with an 11-4 win over Decorah.

Charles City jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings before the Vikings cut the lead in half with 3 runs in the third.

The Comets quickly got those 3 runs back with a “majestic” 3-run HR shot by Chambers in the fourth.

Connell and Staudt each had 3 hits; Wohlers had 2 hits including an RBI-double; and Reetz picked up her sixth win of the season after striking out 7 in seven innings.

With its fifth-straight win, Charles City improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the NEIC.
