Press Staff Report
SUMNER — Charles City junior Ava Ellis scored 15 points that included 4-of-7 free throw shooting, and Comet senior Lydia Staudt had 9 points which all came from 3-of-4 3-point shooting, but it wasn’t enough against Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday as the hosting Cougars cruised to a 60-36 win in both teams’ girls basketball season-opener.
Much of SF’s damage was inflicted by senior Morgan Brandt.
Brandt, who recently signed on to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball for Iowa State University, scored a game-high 33 points. Brandt also dominated the offensive glass with 12 offensive rebounds — she had 19 total rebounds.
Sophomore Keely Collins had six rebounds, and Staudt dishes out four assists and had a pair of steals for Charles City, which will be back in action and on the road on Monday to take on Independence.
