The Charles City High School senior class held its Senior Recognition night on Wednesday, and it was certainly worth the trip over to the North Grand Auditorium for Gillian King.

King received the UNI ROTC Scholarship, worth an estimated $145,000, to cover four years of tuition and fees at the University of Texas, room and board, a book stipend and living stipend for all four years.

Scholarships of more than $320,000 were awarded to more than 50 seniors at the event Wednesday, which was followed by Baccalaureate services.

At the end of the award presentations, CCHS Associate Principal Larry Wolfe bid a tearful farewell to the soon-to-be grads. He reflected on his own graduation, from Waukon, and mentioned four things that had been written by his grandparents in a graduation card he received then.

“Work hard, dream big, do good and make us proud,” he told the seniors.

Mackayla Nierling opened the award ceremony when she was granted the Christina Hixon Award, worth an estimated $18,000. Nierling would receive three more awards at the reception.

Senior Derek LaBarge was awarded the Freda Buchan scholarship, worth $20,000, as well as the American Legion Auxiliary award.

Ciana Sonberg and Mackenzie Wilson made several trips to they stage, as each received a $10,000 Valero scholarship — among five others for Sonberg and eight others for Wilson.

Charles City High School senior Anne Field received the Tye and Cathy Darland Scholarship, worth more than $30,000, which covers full tuition at the University of Iowa for up to four years. The scholarship is awarded to a student from Charles City who plans to attend the UI upon graduation. Tye and Cathy Darland were raised in Charles City, and are 1982 graduates of Charles City High School.
