It might have been pouring down rain outside Tuesday, but inside Charles City High School, life was a beach.

Tuesday of homecoming week was “Tropical Tuesday” at the high school, and many students and teachers alike donned Hawaiian shirts, Bermuda shorts, leis, sandals and sun hats to celebrate. There were even a few who wore colorful life preservers to help keep them afloat.

Those life preservers probably could have been put to better use outside, rather than inside the school. A steady rain and some occasional thunder led to the postponement of Tuesday’s planned “Spirit Day” activities in the community, while the elementary school outdoor field day was cancelled.

Assuming there will be no rain, “Spirit Day” will be today (Wednesday).

During homecoming week, each class gets points for the best dress-up day apparel, and throughout the week the points get tallied, and the students will learn Friday which class had the most spirit.

The rest of the week’s dress up days at the high school will be Winter Wonderland Wednesday, Character/Dynamic Duo Day on Thursday and Orange and Black Blowout on Friday for all schools.

Other scheduled homecoming activities the rest of this week include Fourth Grade Farm Safety Day Wednesday at the Floyd County Fairgrounds and Eighth Grade Community Service Day on Thursday.

Friday will be the busiest day this week, with mobile pep rallies at the elementary schools at 8:30 a.m., the high school tailgate at 11:15 a.m., the pep rally at 2 p.m. followed by the homecoming court coronation at Comet Gym.

The homecoming parade will start on Main Street at 4:15 p.m. Friday, with the Comet Pride Community Tailgate, sponsored by Charles City Community Excellence in Education Foundation, in the Charles City High School parking lot at 4:30 p.m. The tailgate party will include games, face painting and grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for sale. There will be a Comet Hall of Fame recognition at the tailgate at 6 p.m.

The freshman football game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with homecoming court recognition scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

The Comet Marching Band will perform “The Music of Billy Joel” at halftime of the varsity football game, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

After the game, the homecoming dance will be at the high school while the post-game homecoming party will be at the Elks Lodge. The party is sponsored by Charles City Community Excellence in Education Foundation and will include a game replay with coaches, snacks and drinks.

On Saturday morning, the Comet Hall of Fame Brunch will include the Hall of Fame Induction, the Master of Sports Recognition and the Master of Performing Arts Recognition.
