A little orange, a little black, a whole lot of Comet spirit.

Charles City High School students decorated the community on Wednesday, on Spirit Day, as part of homecoming week in the school district.

The homecoming theme this year is “Burning Up the Competition.”

“It’s just showing the community how dedicated we are, and we like it when they support us in everything we do,” said said Jace Cajthaml, a senior.

Lilprayer Toney, a junior, said she chose to decorate the downtown because she wanted to do something different this year. Toney said she enjoyed spending the afternoon with her friends.

“It’s all about having fun,” she said. “It’s about coming together as a family and going out and helping people.”

Among other things, students spent the afternoon marking up the windows downtown, decorating the fence on the south end of Comet Field and painting the street along the high school.

Many students looked like they were dressed for a sleigh ride or a visit to Santa Claus, as the theme for the day was “Winter Wonderland.” Thursday will be Character/Dynamic Duo Day, while Friday will be Orange and Black Blowout Day for all schools.

“We’re painting the downtown and showing people what homecoming is all about,” said Cajthaml, who is a Comet football player. “It’s a day we can spend with our friends and celebrate what’s about to go down on Friday —and that’s us beating the Decorah Vikings.”

Spirit Day was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but the steady rain all afternoon pushed it back a day.

The homecoming pep rally will be Friday at 2 p.m., followed by the homecoming court coronation, at Comet Gym. The homecoming parade will start on Main Street at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

The Comet Marching Band will perform “The Music of Billy Joel” at halftime of the varsity football game, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

After the game, the homecoming dance will be at the high school while the post-game homecoming party will be at the Elks Lodge.
