Comet bowlers win on aged wood

SUMNER — Thunder Lanes is a six-lane wooden bowling alley that Charles City coach Doug Bohlen takes an immediate liking to.

“It reminds me of the alley my dad used to own and had me working in,” Bohlen said.

At least one of Bohlen’s bowlers also took a liking to Thunder Lanes during a rescheduled meet Tuesday against Sumner-Fredericksburg.

“She really bowled well for us,” Bohlen said of senior Mija Cotton, who rolled a two-game series of 449.

“I believe she’s bowled higher,” Bohlen said. “She’s capable of scores like that.”

Both Comet girls and boys teams improved to 7-1 with respective wins over Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The girls won 2,540 to 2,197; the boys won 2,742 to 2,119.

Anchorman Drew Mitchell led the Comet boys with a 393 two-game series, followed by Kaleb Ross (371).

Noah Reams and Jacob Greenzweig both recovered after low-scoring first games to bowl 236 and 221, respectively.

“Sometimes it takes our guys a game to figure it out when we go to a place we haven’t bowled before,” Bohlen said.

The Comets will be back in action this Friday at Buffalo Lanes to face North Iowa.
