171220_J_Evelyn Stabenow obitGreene: Funeral services for Evelyn Stabenow will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2017, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 22, 2017, at Retz Funeral Home, 519 N. First St. Greene, Iowa. with a Rosary Service to follow at 7p.m.

Evelyn was born on July 4th 1927 to Will and Genevieve Stanton Stabenow at their farm home in rural Greene and passed away December 18, 2017 at the Allison Rehabilitation Center in Allison, Iowa. Evelyn attended country school until 8th grade then attended Greene High School where she graduated in 1946.

After High School Evelyn worked at the Charles City Laundry for a number of years until she moved to Greene with her parents. She was a babysitter to many families in Greene along with being a caregiver to her parents.

Evelyn was a deeply caring person and did all the worrying about the wellbeing of friends and family.  She never missed sending greetings to everyone with cards and notes.  Evelyn was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and St Jude’s circle.

Evelyn is survived by her sisters Rita Merfeld of Greene and Carla Phalen of Cedar Falls; her nephews Mike Merfeld, David Merfeld, Pat Phalen and niece Theresa Vickery; great nieces and nephews Jordan Merfeld, Zach (Alysha) Merfeld, Rachel Vickery, Mark Vickery, Trent Merfeld, Jenna Vickery and Tyler Merfeld; great great nieces and nephew Cadence, Taylor and Brady Merfeld; special cousins the Barnetts, Gales and Stanton kids.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law; Richard Merfeld and Michael Phalen; and nephew John Phalen.
