Tough loss for Comets, painful win for Go-Hawks

Waverly-Shell Rock rallies to win Game 1 before sweeping DH

WAVERLY — It was a painful loss for the Comets.

But even as Waverly-Shell Rock celebrated its improbable come-from-behind victory over Charles City in the first game of Friday’s Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader, there was pain endured by the Go-Hawks as well.

One out from getting a complete-game win, Comet senior right-hander Drew Mitchell fielded a one-hopper back to the mound from his starter counterpart Brady Leonard.

Mitchell’s throw to first was high and off the bag forcing Wyatt Stevenson to leap and come up the line to field it before colliding with a hard-running and head-first diving Leonard.

The impact separated the ball from Stevenson and Leonard was ruled safe. With the score 3-2, the Go-Hawks rallied for 2 more runs with freshman Kaden Dewey hitting the walk-off RBI single in the 4-3 final.

But Waverly-Shell Rock had to go without the services of Leonard, who had a double and run scored, and struck out six and yielded two hits in the first game, as his right shoulder was injured.

Smarting themselves from the turn of events in the first game, the Comets rallied for 4 runs to start the second game.

But the Go-Hawks responded with 5 runs in the latter half of the first before completing the doubleheader sweep with a 12-5 victory.

Hunter Destival was 3 for 3 with a double and 4 RBIs, and Luke Willis was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs for the Go-Hawks, who improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the NEIC.

Comet leadoff hitter Nate Lasher was 2 for 4 with a double in 2 runs scored; and Theo Arndt was 2 for 2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored for Charles City (5-4, 1-3) in the second game.

Lasher also had two stolen bases in the first game where he and catcher Dylan Salinas had the Comets’ only hits.
