CHARLES CITY — In what has been a mode of operation that has spilled over from the previous year into the current one, the Charles City Comets once again bolted out of the gate to take a substantial early lead before vanquishing several comeback attempts on way to defeating Waukon, 77-72, in Northeast Iowa boys basketball action Friday at Comet Gym.

For the first time all season, the Comets placed five players in double-figure scoring while winning their eighth straight game to improve to 8-1 overall.

Coming off a big road win against Waverly-Shell Rock the Tuesday before, Charles City remains alone atop the NEIC standings with a still perfect 5-0 conference record.

Senior forward Cade Hemesath led the Comets with a personal season-high 26 points as well as earning double-double honors with 12 rebounds. Noah Schlader and Bradley Andrews also recorded season-high point totals with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Mike Cranshaw added 11, as did junior Jackson Molstead, who also had 11 assists.

For the most part, Charles City controlled the game from start to finish, often leading the contest by 10 or more points. But the Indians did finish strong with some heroic 3-point shooting in the final minute and a half of regulation to keep the spectators from heading to the exits prematurely.

Waukon junior Michael Sweeney led all scorers with 27 points, including four 3-pointers. Evan Armstead scored 18, and Mitchel Snitker added 16 for Waukon (5-3, 3-2).

Charles City will try to keep its perfect conference record intact while hosting New Hampton on Tuesday in the latter game of a girls-boys varsity basketball doubleheader.
