Comet golfers stopped at wet and windy sectional

CHARLES CITY — You would have had to be a complete golf nut to play a round during Friday’s miserable conditions.
Or a glutton for punishment.
Or both.
But with little room for makeup dates during the tailend of the season, the Class 3A Boys Golf Sectional at Cedar Ridge went on as scheduled save for a delay at the start.
While placing 3 golfers in the top 5, Clear Lake won the meet with a team score of 339 as the Lions were led by Jackson Hamlin (81), Tyler Eaton (85), Jack Barrangy (86) and Tate Storbeck (87)
West Delaware, paced by junior Brandon Larson’s medalist score of 80, was runner-up with Tyler Langel (88), Ryan Fangman (88) and Drew Wubbena (90) rounded out the team score of 346.
The top two teams advance to the Class 3A Boys Golf District at Pin Oak Links in Manchester, May 18, hosted by West Delaware.
Other golfers qualifying as individuals include Bryson Hevel of Waverly-Shell Rock, who shot an 83; and Jay Fjelstul of Decorah and Kaden Howard of Independence, who both qualified with 86 scores.
Charles City senior Carter Klatt, who shot a pair of 18-hole scores in the 70s this season including a team-low 77, missed the individual qualifying cut by 1 stroke with an 87.
The Comets, who broke a long drought by advancing to districts for the first time since 1998 last season, couldn’t make the cut this time around with a third-place score of 359 with Theo Arndt (90), Jackson Molstead (91) and Carter Johanningmeier (91) rounding out the scoring.
Though their third-place showing ended their season when it comes to advancing to district and state, the Comets have one more meet on their schedule — the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet taking place today (weather permitting) at Hickory Grove in Oelwein.
