OELWEIN — The excruciating length of baseball games has been a subject that’s been discussed for … ah … excruciating long time.

But on the subject of softball, you got the feeling early on that Charles City’s Northeast Iowa Conference game against hosting Oelwein may end up being clocked well short of a marathon.

It just seemed a matter of the Huskies recording nine outs from the Comets in the pending minimum-inning mercy-rule final.

And that wasn’t easy, especially with Charles City perhaps getting an extra out or two when a line drive that appeared to be caught was ruled a trap nullifying a would-be doubleplay.

But by that time the Comets had already secured their 10th straight victory in an eventual 19-0 final that took roughly an hour and 10 minutes, while improving their overall record to 17-1 and undefeated NEIC mark to 8-0.

As for recording nine Huskies outs … Comet ace Sami Heyer handled most of that task while striking out six in three innings for her 12th win of the season. Of the four balls the Huskies put in play, Kyle Parmely’s single was the team’s lone hit.

As for recorded hits for the Comets … there were quite a few, but not as many of the runs scored.

Heyer had three hits; leadoff hitter Lisabeth Fiser had three hits, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored; Tayler Schmidt was 2 for 2 with a doubles and 4 RBIs; Ciana Sonberg had a double and a triple with 3 RBIs; Kelby Katcher was 2 for 2 with a double and 3 RBIs; and Maddie Peters was 2 for 2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

After winning 10 games in eight days, the Comets are due to have the weekend off before hosting Decorah on Monday at Sportsmen’s Park.
