CHARLES CITY — Talk about motivating factors.

The Charles City Comets softball team, which was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for two-straight weeks, has dropped to No. 3 according to the latest rankings released Thursday.

Taking over the top spot are the Independence Mustangs, who incidentally are playing the Comets on Friday in a non-conference game at Sportsmen’s Park.

The game was originally scheduled for May 25 before being postponed due to weather.

Independence was listed at No. 2 in the previous rankings.

Waverly-Shell Rock, who was not listed in the previous Class 4A rankings, is back in at No. 15 after defeating the Comets in Waverly on June 14.

Other No. 1-ranked teams include Lansing, Kee (Class 1A),  Durant (2A), Davenport Assumption (3A) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5A).
