Press Staff Report

The Charles City Comets softball team had three players — sophomore Lisabeth Fiser, junior Sami Heyer and senior Tayler Schmidt — named all-state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Fiser and Heyer were named to the Class 4A first team as Charles City and Oskaloosa were the only schools to have multiple players (2) named to the squad.

Schmidt was named to the second team.

For outfielder and leadoff hitter Fiser, it was her first all-state selection after leading the Comets in hits (72), runs (50) and stolen bases (42) while batting .503. Fiser also hit .500 during last week’s State Softball Championships.

While patrolling right field, Fiser didn’t make a single error all season.

For Comet ace Heyer, it was her second all-state selection as she was a third-teamer last season. From the circle, Heyer had a 23-5 record with a 1.04 earned run average. In a little more than 174 innings pitched, Heyer struck out 278 batters for a total of 560 over the past two years.

Heyer also hit .333 this past season.

For Schmidt, it was her second all-state selection as she was a third-teamer last season. The second baseman led the Comets in homers (12), RBIs (48) and slugging percentage (.844). She only made three errors in 92 chances while playing mostly as a middle infielder.

Schmidt also had three grand-slams this season — one in the state tourney — and had a 6-1 pitching record.

North Butler senior catcher Nicole Heeren, who was an all-stater as a sophomore, was selected to the Class 1A second team after leading the Bearcats in hits (40), doubles (10), home runs (9), RBIs (48), walks (17), batting average (.449), slugging percentage (.865) and on-base percentage (.542).

North Butler senior Marcy Jacobs and junior Alex Mathers were both Class 1A honorable mention selections.

Jacobs, who was a third-teamer last season, hit .367 this past season and led the Bearcats in runs scored (34).

Mathers had a 19-11 pitching record while serving as North Butler’s ace.

Rockford senior Marissa Norby was named to the Class 1A third team after being an honorable mention selection last season. This past season, Norby led the Warriors in hits (32), home runs (5) and slugging percentage (.671), and was tied for the team lead in RBIs (27).

As Rockford’s ace, Norby was 13-6 with opponents hitting only .190 off her.
