OSAGE — If anyone earned a weekend night out on the town to celebrate, it was the Charles City girl wrestlers.

They had just taken third place out of a field of 50 teams at the inaugural 2019 Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Interscholastic Girls State Meet, Saturday at Waverly-Shell Rock.

But if Saturday morning and afternoon are alright for fighting, there’s no reason that it shouldn’t spill into the evening.

Before the annual Saturday night dual meet between the Comets and the hosting Osage Green Devils, participants from Charles City’s state team engaged in a series of exhibition matches and went on the prove that their high placing wasn’t a fluke.

One-hundred-and-six-pounder Marissa Bengston; 126-pounders Marley Hagarty, Emma Perez and Toni Maloy; 132-pounder Emma Grimm and 152-pounder Allie Cross all recorded fall victories — Grimm had two pins — against Osage’s girls team, which placed fifth at the meet.

All the aforementioned Comet wrestlers, as well as 195-pounder Sydney Peterson, placed and/or scored points for the Comets, who compiled 73 team points.

The hosting Go-Hawks, who boasted the 132-pound champion with Annika Behrends, placed first with 144 points. Colfax-Mingo placed second, 5 points ahead of the Comets.

Nashua-Plainfield, which placed 12th, was led by 152-pound state champion Toyia Griffin.

The subsequent Comets-at-Green Devils boys dual was — as usual — highly competitive and entertaining with a bevy of close matches illuminated by an overhead flood-light main event boxing style.

With Charles City giving away the 138-pound bout to forfeit, Osage won the dual, 39-26, while improving its dual record to 12-1.

In the first match of the varsity dual, heavyweights Chase Crooks (freshman, Charles City) and Conner Smith (junior, Osage) set the tone as a second-period escape by Crooks proved to be the difference in a 1-0 decision final.

Later, Charles City two-time state qualifier senior Dylan Koresh edged sophomore Spencer Mooberry — who is ranked No. 5 among Class 2A 170-pounders by IAwrestle — 4-3.

Other close victories for the Comets included sophomore Bronson Forsyth’s 6-5 win over Ryan Adams in the 132-pound match; Carter Proffitt’s 5-4 decision over Colin Muller in the 152-pound match; and Roush Jaeger’s 5-3 win over Noah O’Malley after scoring a match-winning takedown with 8 seconds remaining in their 145-pound bout.

Charles City had a couple of bonus-point victories. Returning state podium-placer Jack Sindlinger pinned Keaton Muller 2:22 into their 195-pound match, and in the 182-pound match before, Caden Collins earned a 17-0 technical fall win over Owen Mullen after being awarded a 3-point nearfall at the end of the second period.
