WAVERLY — The analogy “David vs. Goliath” gets slung around too often in the sports world.

But you would be hard pressed to provide a better description of Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference volleyball match between the Charles City Comets and the hosting Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks.

Led by 6’2” senior Averi Weichers and 6’1” junior Katelyn Eggena, both of whom already have 40 blocks this season, the Go-Hawks went into Tuesday’s contest ranked No. 9 among Class 4A teams according to the latest rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Comets were coming off one of their better match wins of the season against Waukon the week before. Playing in WSR’s sultry gym — the school did have its air conditioning employed during what may be summer’s final “dog day”, but it wasn’t enough to prevent numerous match delays to towel-swipe player-sweat off the floor — the Comets fell behind early while dropping the first two sets (25-16, 25-19).

But though the sweat may have needed to have been swept repeatedly off the floor, the Comets themselves were determined not to be swept by the Go-Hawks as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set and — despite WSR having to call two timeouts in hopes to cool down the Comets — Charles City won the third set 25-17.

As if the Giant had awoken, the Go-Hawks took a 5-0 lead in the fourth set ahead of extending the gap to 23-7. The Comets went on to score 8 of the next 9 points before WSR finally put them away (25-15) to complete a 4-1 match victory.

The Go-Hawks improved to 14-8; the Comets fell to 13-7.

Leading the way for Charles City were sophomore Mya Rimrod, who had 13 kills and 2 service aces; senior Morgan Maloy, who had 13 assists; senior Ava Ellis, who had 10 digs; freshman Keely Anderegg, who had 2 blocks and 2 aces; and junior Emma Mller and sophomore Jadyn Van Horn, who each had 3 blocks.

Charles City’s next scheduled match (Sept. 27) is away against NEIC foe Crestwood.
