The Weekly Word: A Simple Way to Pray

By Pastor Paul & Dixie Phillips

The followers of Jesus asked Him one day, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus gave them the prayer that we call The Lord’s Prayer.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

— Matthew 9:11-15

This prayer teaches us a simple prayer; simple yet direct and filled with gratitude. This is the biblical example of how we should pray.

We should approach God with reverence and respect. He is the great King and Creator. We can pray for our own needs and concerns, but we must never forget the needs of others. God hears our prayers and knows our every need. The Bible even teaches He knows our needs before we ask Him. Pray in faith and assurance of His great love and care for His children. He loves to hear us pray.

The great apostle Paul taught this about prayer.

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

— 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We can learn a lot from The Lord’s Prayer and Paul’s teaching on prayer. So let God hear from you today.
