Greene Herb Fest draws a crowd to scenic park

Strolling through Perrin Park in Greene on Sunday, the work idyllic came to mind.
With perfect weather, the Shell Rock River flowing calmly in the background, kids laughing on the playground and folks enjoying snacks and conversations in the gazebo, that would be enough for a nice day.
Throw in Herb Fest, with its score and more booths selling handcrafted items such as artwork, stained glass, pottery, jewelry, clothing accessories and other knick-knacks, as well as plants, vegetables, honey and floral arrangements, then add food, a jaunty piano accompaniment and even a chance to sample wines and teas, and, well, what more would you need?
Greene Herb Fest had been a community celebration since 1994, but fell by the wayside when its principal promoter retired. It was brought back to much-agreed-upon success last year and observed the second year of what is planned to be an annual event again on Sunday.
People wandered through the park throughout the day, perusing the eclectic variety of items for sale, sampling the offerings of the Stone Cliff Winery of Dubuque or the teas of Whistling Thistle Farmstead of Shell Rock, while enjoying Sam Cross of Osage on the keyboard.
