Party in the Park 2019 will debut on Friday, June 7, from 5-9 p.m. in Central Park in downtown Charles City.

The summer series returns for its 17th season, organized by Community Revitalization and made possible through the support of local businesses, according to Mark Wicks, community development director.

Admission is free and all are invited to enjoy live music, food and beverage vendors, the Pubcrawlers’ outdoor beer garden, children’s activities and more.

Friday’s event will have the theme “80’s Night,” featuring the band Redline. There will be free inflatable rides that night, courtesy of Zoetis, and a 1980s hairstyle contest.

“Display your ‘rad’ 80s hairdo at the bandshell at 6:45 p.m. for a chance to win a special prize,” Wicks said. Sponsors that evening will be Cambrex Charles City, First Security Bank & Trust, Larry Pump CPA, Fareway, the Charles City Press and Zoetis.

First formed in 1982, Redline plays classic rock music, especially Top 40 tunes from the 1980s. The band still features four of its original performers, who started playing together in high school. Band members hail from Waverly, Cedar Falls and Dysart.

Scheduled children’s activities June 7 will include the Boy Scout peddle cars, The Bridge Barrel Train, ring toss, Bethany Alliance 9 Square, I.C. School mini golf and carnival-style games, along with the Lost Llamas 4-H Club pool search game.

Food vendors the first night will include Black Dog BBQ, Hy-Vee, Island Grill, Maria’s Tacos, along with Here’s the Scoop ice cream, the Rotary Popcorn Wagon and The Cookie Doughtique.

Future themes for Party in the Park will be:

• June 21 — “Country Night” with the music of Wild Card and line dancing demonstration and instruction by Double G Line Dancing. Sponsors that night will be Central Park Dentistry, L & J Industries, Trelleborg Wheel Systems America, Floyd County Farm Bureau and Kwik Star.

• July 12 — “Family Game Night” and the music of Highway 9. That night’s sponsors are CUSB Bank, R & S Mowing, Edward Jones (Mark Sindlinger and Jeremy Heyer), Feller & Associates, Daniels Auto Collision and Structure Real Estate.

• July 26 — “Tailgating Night” gives people a chance to show off the fan apparel and colors of their favorite sports teams. There will again be inflatable rides, along with the sounds of the Jay Clyde Band. That evening is sponsored by Cedar Valley Orthodontics, Dairy Queen, Family Community Credit Union, Kronlage & Olson, Lessin Supply, Special Medical Services, The Optometric Center, Perry Novak Electric, Office World/Rapid Printers, Pizza Ranch, State Farm Insurance – Jeremy Rogstad, North Iowa Broadcasting (KCHA) and Jendro Sanitation.

• Aug. 9 — A trip back in time with Endless Summer on stage during “Retro Night.” Classic car owners are invited to bring their ride down and show it off, while roller skate enthusiasts are also encouraged to bring their skates and roll to the rockin’ sounds in a dedicated skating area. Sponsoring that last night will be Appliance Plus/U.S. Cellular, Schueth Ace Hardware, Stewart Realty Co., First Citizens Bank, Subway and Valero Renewables.

Attendees for any of the nights are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on in the park. Tokens to purchase food, drink and game passes may be obtained from the “Chuck Chip Table” near the center of the park or from volunteers in red Chuck aprons stationed throughout the park during the events.

Chuck Chips are also available in advance at the Community Development Office at 401 N. Main Street, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. This year’s Chuck Chips are being sponsored by Valero Renewables, which is celebrating its 10th year in Charles City. Past year’s Chuck Chips will not be accepted.
