Chapman Catt home and museum holding open house Saturday

Travel back in time at the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Museum and Girlhood Home this Saturday for the National 19th Amendment Society’s annual open house.

The free event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17, and will feature displays of Chapman Catt’s antique dresses.

“The dresses feature exquisite pin-tucks; hand-stitched lace, silk, and satin; meticulous box pleats; and other precious fabrics and exquisite sewing techniques,” according to information from the National 19th Amendment Society (NNAS), which runs the home and museum.

“Carrie dressed in an elegant style appropriate for the leader of the nation’s suffrage movement,” the society said. “Her clothes were all handmade, and each had a pocket for a handkerchief. The displayed dresses are in keeping with her love of the color blue.”

The NNAS annual open house will also include a dedication at 10:30 a.m. of newly-installed bricks that feature the names of loved ones, organizations and individuals. The bricks form pathways to the house and around it.

Free rides to and from the Girlhood Home and Museum will be available from the Art & Heritage Festival, with pick-up times at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. from Parsons Real Estate Parking lot.

The Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Museum and Girlhood Home is located at 2379 Timber Lane, south of Charles City. Take South Grand Avenue south, then turn east on county road B59/240th St., then turn north onto Timber Lane.
