The Charles City Lions Club added a bit of patriotic color to the local cityscape over Easter Weekend, as club members Russ Schwarz, Jeremy Heyer and David Schweizer installed 32 flags in the Willson-Lorber Rose Garden along the north bank of the Cedar River.

The Lions Club said in a statement that the flags were placed to remind everyone “just how free this country is, even in the middle of a pandemic.”

The flags were installed Friday and taken down Monday afternoon.

“This will be behind us before we know it and we will be a stronger and more resilient nation as a result,” the club said.

Referring to the COVID-19 situation, the Lions expressed hope that the nation will return to some semblance of normalcy in the weeks and months to come. The club said it hoped that in the meantime, everyone will do their part to protect each other, as well as themselves, and serve where they feel comfortable.
