Floyd County special election today (Tuesday)

By Bob Steenson, bsteenson@charlescitypress.com

Today is the last chance to vote in the special election to decide how Floyd County supervisors will be elected in the future.

All eight polling places are open today (Tuesday) until 8 p.m.

There is only one question on the ballot. Voters are asked to choose one of three plans for how supervisors will be elected.

The three options are:

•Plan One – No districts. Supervisors are all elected at-large. Candidates live anywhere in the county, and every county voter can vote for all seats.

•Plan Two – County is divided into districts. Candidates have to live in the district they want to represent, but all county voters can vote for all districts.

•Plan Three – County is divided into districts. Candidates have to live in the district they want to represent, and voters can only vote for the candidates in their district.

Plan One is the plan that the county currently uses, and has used since 1970.

Plan Three is the plan recommended by the Coalition for Better County Government, the group largely responsible for petitioning for the special election.

The plan that gets the most votes is the one that goes into effect for the general election in 2022.

The polling sites are:

•Charles City Precinct 1 – Floyd County Courthouse.

•Charles City Precinct 2 – Messiah Lutheran Church.

•Charles City Precinct 3 – Trinity United Methodist Church.

•Floyd/Cedar/Niles Precinct – Floyd Community Center.

•Rock Grove/Rudd Precinct – Nora Springs City Hall.

•Rockford/Ulster Precinct – Rockford City Hall.

•Scott/Union/Pleasant Grove Precinct – Marble Rock Library.

•St. Charles/Riverton Precinct – Cedar Valley Transportation Center.

As of Monday, 214 in-person absentee votes had been cast and 15 mail absentee ballots returned in the election, according to Auditor’s Office Clerk Amanda Theilen.
