Charles City’s Sarah Mitchell of Mitchell Family Show Cattle earned both grand champion and reserve grand champion honors at the Prospect Cattle Show, held at the Floyd County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The show, hosted by the Charles City FFA, is an open show for younger calves that will be shown at the Floyd County Fair and Iowa State Fair next summer. Mitchell also earned top honors in the Market Animal Show.

There were 27 head of cattle shown at the show this year, in breeding heifers, market heifers and market steers. The calves shown on Saturday will be shown in the summer of 2022.

Breeding Heifer Show overall results included Mitchell as grand champion and reserve grand champion, while Anna Reicks of Lawler placed third, Luella Reicks of Lawler fourth and Brady Frascht of Charles City fifth.

In the Market Animal Show, Mitchell was followed by Dylan Dight of Rockford, Luke Paplow of Nashua and Jodie Johnson of Aplington, who earned both fourth and fifth places.

This is the third year the Charles City FFA has hosted this show, which is usually held in October.

The Charles City FFA Show Committee plans the show, invites the judge, and runs the show the day of the event. Committee members for the show this year were Delaney Ruzicka, Taylor Quade, Brayton Quade, and Maya Bruening.

The Mitchell family has been having a good run this year.

Sarah had shown the reserve grand champion prospect breeding heifer at the 2021 Iowa State Fair Prospect Show as well. This is the premier show for cattle breeders in the state to showcase their animals for the coming show season.

The heifer named Jenny was bred by the family.

Since the Iowa State Fair, Jenny has also won the Cattle Battle show in Mason City and the Big 4 Fair Prospect Show in Nashua. The family plans to keep Jenny for Sarah to show and eventually be a donor cow for their cattle operation.
