Two Charles City residents received injuries in a house fire early Saturday morning, the Charles City Fire Department reported.

The CCFD was called to a home at 201 Oliver St. at 4:37 a.m. Saturday for a report of a fire.

“Upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible from the exterior of the home. There were occupants in the home at the time of the fire, and all of them escaped the home on their own,” reported Fire Chief Eric Whipple.

Two CCFD engines responded to the fire.

Fire, smoke and water damage was major, especially in the basement of the home, Whipple said in a report.

“The origin of the fire was in the basement and the cause of the fire remains under investigation,” he said. “Firefighters remained on scene for approximately three hours, with fire units back at the station around 7:15 a.m. Firefighters returned to the location for additional overhaul due to a flare-up around 10:30 that same morning.”

There were two injuries reported of occupants of the home and they were transported to Floyd County Medical Center via AMR Ambulance. No injuries occurred to any firefighters during or after the fire, the report said.

There were also pets in the home that were dead when firefighters found them, the report said.

The home is owned by Karla Cagley according to the Floyd County Assessors GIS website.

Assisting the CCFD at the scene was Floyd County Communications, Colwell Fire Department, Floyd Fire Department, AMR Ambulance, Floyd County Search and Rescue, Charles City Police Department and Floyd County Emergency Management Agency.
