Some changes are on the way at The Charles Theatre as the New Year approaches.

Starting Jan. 1, the theater will be adjusting its schedule to encourage more attendance and free up the screen for additional programming.

Coming out of the pandemic, the theater has gradually expanded its showings to six nights a week, running Tuesday through Sunday. Going into 2023, it will be scaling back that schedule, premiering new movies on Friday evenings, followed by a Saturday showing, two showings on Sunday afternoon and evening, and a “Last Chance” Thursday show.

“We’re waiting for some real fantastic movies to come along,” said manager Karen Youngerman.

The theater will start out 2023 with a two-week showing of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” followed by “The Fabelmans” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

The reduction in movie showings doesn’t mean the theater will be idle though.

Mara, a local clothing store, will be hosting its annual Prom Runway Show on Monday, Jan. 2. and Youngerman says that they are in discussions with a faith-based group to hold a Monday night Christian movie once a month.

“We’re hoping to get some churches behind us to promote,” Youngerman said.
