IC celebrates school year’s start with watermelon feed

The students at Immaculate Conception Elementary enjoyed a special summer treat on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Kids at the school spent the late afternoon snacking on freshly cut watermelon slices, served up by volunteer parents.

“It’s kind of a welcome back to school,” said Lisa Soifer. “It’s a fun way to start the school year off.”

The watermelon feed was originally scheduled for the previous Friday, but was rescheduled due to classes getting out unexpectedly early due to the heat.

With 12 watermelons worth of slices to go around, the kids patiently waited for everybody to get their serving as the staggered classes were released onto the playground. Once everybody got a slice it became a free-for-all for seconds and the remaining watermelon was quickly finished off by kids racing to see how many pieces they could eat.
